Excellent news are coming to us from Portugal: after gaining 18% last month in what was the largest year-on-year increase in 2.5 years, new car sales are up another 17% in July to 10,844 registrations, which indicates the recession could be over… Renault confirms it is the most popular carmaker in the country with 1,090 sales and 10.1% share, followed (like in the year-to-date ranking) by Volkswagen at 9% and Peugeot at 8.7%. The next 4 carmakers all lodge very impressive year-on-year increases, well above the market: BMW is up 25% to 7.3% share, Fiat up 22% to 7.2%, Opel up 55% to 6.3% and Mercedes up 39% to 6%. Notice also Seat up 75% to #9, Toyota up 90% to #10, Chevrolet up 27% to #15, Kia up 48% to #15, Volvo up 34% to #16 and Lancia up a huge 485% to #18 vs. #25 year-to-date.
