After a one month hiatus, thanks to the tip of a French fan of BSCB Mamy Furax, the Brazilian mid-month summaries can now resume! Over the first half of April, Brazil new car sales are up a booming 20% year-on-year to 160,566 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 948,207 units, up 5% on 2012. The top of the models ranking seems to have stabilised somehow after a very eventful start of 2013: the VW Gol is at 7.1% share over the period, very close to its YTD 7.2%, and is followed by the Fiat Uno at 5.8% vs. 5.6% and the Fiat Palio at 5.1% vs. 5.6%.

The Hyundai HB20 is on the podium's doorstep again thanks to 6,819 sales and 4.2% share, but this time the best performer within the Top 10 is the VW Voyage boosted by its facelift and up 4 spots on March to land in 6th place at 5,957 units and 3.7% share. The Chevrolet Onix is down a painful 5 ranks to #10, while the Chevrolet Prisma is stable at #17, the Toyota Etios HB up a further 5 spots to #22 and the Sedan up one to #31.

I’ll maintain what I’ve said before, the Onix is the car to buy and not HB20 or Etios. This month, GM is having trouble with workers who are deliberately going slow and beefing up their strength for a possible strike. When the situation normalizes and production reaches normalcy, the Onix will fight the HB for fourth. Don’t forget the up! has been delayed again. When it is offered at the end of the year, the market will see some interesting times.

Hyundai really hit it big with the HB20. I excpected Toyota to score a bit better with the Etios, although its ranking is not bad at all.
