World Full Year 2012: Discover the Top 1000 best-selling models!

Toyota Corolla Furia Concept World 2012The Toyota Corolla kept its crown in 2012, but just. Will the 2013 model (concept above) save it again this year?

* NOW UPDATED with the Top 1000 best-selling models! Click on title to see *

Finally it is here! Thanks to the hard work of Austin Rutherford the much anticipated models ranking worldwide for 2012 is now available. And this year I have a surprise for you: improving on the Top 100 models I gave you for the Full Year 2011, I am now introducing an all-new Top 1000 worldwide models ranking for 2012! Yes you read right, Top 1000, well Top 937 actually as there are not enough models in the world to make a Top 1000... Now that's a big jump! Nowhere else will you find this information.

Ford Focus World 2012Its tremendous success in China nearly pushed the Ford Focus to #1 worldwide in 2012...

More detailed sales data for the Toyota Corolla means the Auris, Matrix and Rumion were all shed, so we have a sales figure for the Corolla sedan worldwide spanning 3 generations (IX still on sale in China, X on sale worldwide, and XI on sale in Japan). It was a tight race with the Ford Focus, which has the benefit of hatchback, station wagon and sedan versions spanning two generations. Corolla leads once more with 1,097,132 sales vs. 1,036,683 for the Focus, showing the impact the Chinese market had this year: the Islands row disadvantaged the Corolla sales while the Focus brilliantly took the Passenger Car crown in extremis at the end of the year...

Hyundai Elantra World 2012. Picture courtesy of www.auto.sina.com.cnThe Hyundai Elantra makes it 3 compact cars on the worldwide podium in 2012...

In an outstanding third place we find the Hyundai Elantra with 829,192 sales spanning 3 generations and helped by the launch of the new gen in China this year. The Toyota Camry ranks 4th at 797,466 units including the Aurion which is in essence the Chinese and Russian Camry, while the Ford F-Series rounds up the Top 5 with 785,028 sales, followed by the Chevrolet Cruze at 784,014 units, however both only relying one one single generation.

Toyota Camry World 2012The Toyota Camry (Russian version pictured) is #4 in the world this year

The VW Passat is #7, ahead of the Nissan Tiida/Versa/Sunny. Nissan has not been kind to us stat fans by naming their models completely differently in separate regions and not replacing them with their logical successors. It's a mess: in Australia for example, the new Sylphy and 2nd gen Tiida are both called Pulsar while the Versa sedan is named Almera... So I've done my best to keep it simple in the ranking but it's not perfect.

Chevrolet Cruze World 2012The Chevrolet Cruze ranks 6th in 2012.

One notch below we find the VW Golf at #9, Ford Fiesta and the VW Polo/Vento. This might look like a low ranking for the Golf but this year the Golf Plus was stripped out, and also remember the Jetta (#18) is in effect its sedan version, with both models adding up to almost 1.3 million sales worldwide.

Honda CR-V 2013The Honda CR-V is the best-selling SUV in the world in 2012

Other notable appearances in the Top 20 include the Toyota Hilux at #15 with 637,706 units, the Honda CR-V best-selling SUV in the world thanks to the new gen at #16 and 635,256 sales, the Suzuki Swift boosted by the huge success in India of both its hatchback and sedan (DZire) versions at #19 and 532.462 units and the Wuling Sunshine #1 Chinese vehicle at #20 with 523,724 sales.

    @Paul

It doesn’t make any sense because they aren’t the same car. If you do that, you should do the same with the Jetta, Golf, Octavia, Leon, A3, etc.. or the same with the Megane, Tiida, Qashqai, Versa, etc.. Just because two cars share a plataform doesn’t mean that they are the same.

The Chevy Cruze is a cheaper, nastier, uglier version of the Opel/Vaxhall Astra. Add Cruze numbers to Astra and it would have been the worlds best seller by a mile.

@Pedro Maybe not, the new Jetta is a very different (cheaper, decontented) car than the Golf.
Once the Mk7 Golf rolls out worldwide, the days of the Golf and Jetta being hatch and sedan versions of the same car will be well and truly over.

Hey Matt, great report – these figures are fascinating! Just wondered… the Alfa Romeo 159/Brera/Spider position at 4,660 seems quite low, is there a reason for this? Is this definitely accurate? Thanks

    @Nuria
Can’t confirm actual numbers, but I think it is a plausible figure: in 2012 the Seat Leon was nearly at the end of its career and, apart from Spain, it was not selling that much in the rest of Europe. 2013, with the introduction of the new Leon, will be a different story.

Hello! Very interesting report since it’s so difficult to find data on the internet.
I am surprised though by SEAT LEON sales, they seem really low at barely 67.000 units…is there anyone who could confirm if this figure is exact?
    Thanks!!

    David :
In Australia many models are over-represented. Australia is 1.3% of the global market, yet the following models far exceed this figure.

Australia is not only a dumping ground (very low tariffs), it’s also the world’s test market. with an affluent but tiny population, if a car sells badly, it won’t contaminate europe or usa markets.

In Australia many models are over-represented. Australia is 1.3% of the global market, yet the following models far exceed this figure. 22% of Mazda BT-50s around the world are sold in Australia. This is followed with 14% for the following: Nissan Patrol, Nissan X-Trail, Hyundai i30, and CX-9. 13% of Mitsubishi Tritons and Lancers are sold in Australia. 12% of Mazda3s and Toyota Prados, and 11% of Suzuki Kizashis and Nissan Navaras.

I’m curious as to the origins of the 2012 sales of Proton and Perodua cars. Last time I checked, there were no sales data for the Malaysian market during the second half of 2012. Am I missing something ?

Thanks in advance for the clarification on the matter, I appreciate it. :]

Sonata is also known as i45 in: Singapore, NZ, Australia, and Colombia. The Escape and Kuga are different vehicles. One version of the Escape is built in Taiwan and is completely unrelated to the Kuga sold in Europe. Confusingly, the Kuga is rebadged as an Escape in the US. The Taiwanese Escape and US Escape (both based on a 2001 design) should not be combined with the Kuga/”New” Escape.

    Dear matt,

In your World 11 months figures, Toyota vitz/yaris/vios was at number 23 with sales 422,250, in this the vitz/yaris/vios has jumped to number 12 with 708619 sales, how is that possible that it sold 286369 in one month ??

    • matgasnier
      March 20th, 2013 at 22:18 | #47

      Hi Sdogar,
Nope it has not sold that many units in one month, however the full year figures are much more complete than the ones I had after 11 months and many countries were added, which for some models has drastically changed their position. You will notice I haven’t published a December update as the sales figures would have been all over the place.
Hope this helps give some explanation.
      Best,
      Matt
