Graubünden (Switzerland) 2012: Kingdom of Four Wheel Drives

Thanks to Rutger we have now access to official data for a region of Switzerland called Graubünden, the country’s largest and easternmost canton and home of world-famous ski station St Moritz. The canton is entirely mountainous, and locally known as “the world’s 4WD kingdom”… Why? Because out of 7,613 new vehicles sold in the canton in 2012, no less than 5,152 or 68% were Four Wheel Drives…

Suzuki is the #3 brand in the canton vs. #18 overall in Switzerland.

Now let’s get into the detail of the most popular brands in this ‘kingdom’… Volkswagen leads the way but just: with 1,014 sales and 13.3% share, 65% of which are 4WD, it is only 14 units above Skoda at 1,000 and 75% 4WD ratio. Very surprising but kind of logical when you know how fond this region is of 4WD, Suzuki is the third most popular carmaker here with 645 sales and 8.5% share, 95% of which being 4WD – yes Grand Vitara we are looking at you!

Notice also Audi at #4 with 84% 4WD ratio, BMW at #5 with 87%, Subaru at #7 with Mercedes at #6 with 65% and Dacia at #9 with 64% (thanks Duster). Further down, notice Volvo up to #11 vs. #17 overall in Switzerland, Mitsubishi up from #23 to #15 and Jeep up from #28 to #19.
