Singapore January 2013: Mercedes grabs 26% market share!

In January, 2,289 new vehicles found a buyer in Singapore, a unique market mainly due to Certificates of Entitlement, a government program meaning Singapore residents have to bid for the right to buy a motor vehicle resulting in cars costing more than double their normal price. Another element put in place by the Singaporean government in January will influence the ranking this year:  a new Carbon Emissions-based Vehicle Scheme (CEVS) means diesel vehicles get up to S$20,000 rebate. This month’s ranking does not reflect this yet as most manufacturers are scrambling to add diesel variants to their range given in 2012 diesel models only accounted for 1.3% of total sales…

Suffering the aftershock of an artificially boosted month of December, BMW, leader in 2011 and 2012, is down to #3 this month with 289 sales and 12.6%, leaving the pole position to Mercedes up to an out-of-this-word 589 units and 25.7% market share! Volkswagen takes the second spot with 352 sales and 15.4% while Toyota drops to #4 at just 9.5% vs. 15.2% in 2012. Other great performers this month include Jaguar up to #6 with 3.5% share vs. #15 and 1.4% in 2012, Porsche up to #9 vs. #12, Mazda up to #11 vs. #18 and Bentley up to #19 vs. #24.
