The Peruvian new car market is going from strength to strength: after reaching record levels both in 2010 (120,800 registrations) and 2011 (144,485), it manages to grow by another 23% in 2012 to hit a best-ever 178,373 units. Interestingly, it is the provinces outside the capital city Lima that register the biggest sales growth this year: while Lima is up 19% year-on-year at 122,121 registrations, Cuzco, where the Macchu Picchu is located, is up a huge 51% on 2011, Junin 43%, La Libertad up and Arequipa up 32%.

Brand-wise, Toyota leads the way with 17.9% market share, ahead of Hyundai at 14.1%, Kia at 10%, Chevrolet at 8.7% and Nissan at 8.5%. If we only consider Passenger Cars, Toyota’s share is at an even more impressive 20.6% but this time Chevrolet follows at 15,5%, with Kia #3 at 14.7% and Hyundai #4 at 14%.

Hyundai Tucson

There is no surprise atop the models ranking: as it has been the case for most of the last decade, the Toyota Yaris is by far the most popular vehicle in the country with 11,058 sales and 6.2%. It is followed by the Kia Rio at 5,031 units and 2.8% while the Chevrolet Sail is getting very close with 4,980 sales. The Hyundai Accent (2.5%) and Nissan Tiida (2.3%) round up the Top 5. The Hyundai Tucson is the best-selling SUV at 3,708 units and 2.1%, ahead of the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Santa Fe.
