Danish new car sales are definitely bucking the gloomy European trend, up 8% year-on-year in August to a record 13,654 registrations, boosted by private sales up 47% vs. August 2011. The year-to-date total stands at 114,565 units, up 1% on 2011 and more in 8 months than during the entire year 2009... This is it: the VW Up! is now the best-seller in Denmark in the 2012 year-to-date ranking with 5,522 sales and 4.8%, thanks to a record month of August at 1,375 units and a world-best 8.2% market share. This is the third time after last March and last June that the VW Up! leads the Danish models ranking, with Denmark the first country in the world to crown the Up! in a year-to-date ranking...

Peugeot 107

The 3 models following the Up! in August could well be holding hands, as they are the 3 Kolin sisters (because all manufactured in Kolin, Czech Republic): the Toyota Aygo is #2 like in the year-to-date ranking with 776 sales and 4.6%, ahead of the Peugeot 107 at 603 units and 3.6% and the Citroen C1 with 455 sales and 2.7%, all adding up to an astounding 1,834 units for 11% of the Danish market, by far their best-performing market in the world.

Denmark is the Seat Mii's best-performing market by far

But even with this world-best performance, it looks like the Kolin sisters have found their match in Denmark: meet the Bratislava sisters! Along with the VW Up!, the Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo are assembled in Bratislava and also deliver amazing scores: the Mii is up 12 spots on July to a world-best #7 with 417 sales and 2.5% (compared to #116 in Spain!) while the Citigo is up 17 ranks to #8 at 358 units and 2.1%, an only slightly lower market share than in its native Czech Republic where it is #6 with 2.3% this month. All in all, the Bratislava sisters sell 2,150 units in Denmark in August for an out-of-this world 12.9% share which could go up even further in the coming months.

The Skoda Citigo is doing nearly as well in Denmark as in Czech Republic

Other great performers this month include the VW Polo up 9 ranks to #5, the Peugeot 208 up 8 to #10 and the Renault Twingo up 20 to #16. Notice also that only 5 models within the August Top 30 are not mini or small cars: the VW Golf at #18, the Hyundai i30 at #20, the Kia Cee'd at #24, the Peugeot 308 at #27 and the Renault Scenic at #30.

    You wrote, “Notice also that only 4 models within the August Top 30 are not mini or small cars: the VW Golf at #18, the Hyundai i30 at #20, the Kia Cee’d at #24 and the Renault Scenic at #30.” That should be 5 models, you overlooked the Peugeot 308 at #27! But otherwise a great job (as usual, I might ad).

    @Jagger
    No wonder with those extreme Danish car taxes. On top of the MRSP including value added tax comes a 105% registration tax if the price of the car doesn’t exceed roughly EUR 10,000 / US $ 13,000. If the car is more expensive, the rate is again 105% for the first EUR 10,000 / US $ 13,000 and 180% for the amount on top of that. These figures are truly amazing. Just visit the Danish websites of car brands (country code .dk) and have a look at the price lists.

    It looks like the Danes have a very strong preference for the smallest class of cars.

    Wow!With Up! Mii Citigo and the Aygo 107 C1 all in the Top10 the Danish Top10 have basically two cars occupying 6 positions. Those Bratislava and Kolin sisters make this market look like a family business.
