At 317,152 units, Japanese passenger car sales are up 41% year-on-year in June, still off a low based as June 2011 sales were still disrupted by the after-effects of the  tsunami that hit the country a couple of months before. The year-to-date total stands at 1,856,934 registrations, up 55% on 2011. Like in April and May, two Toyota hybrids dominate the models ranking: the Prius leads the way with 28,456 sales (+46%) ahead of the Aqua at 25,079. The Honda Fit rounds up the podium with 22,068 units and is followed by the Toyota Vitz and Honda Freed.

Toyota 86

While the Honda StepWGN stays at a robust 7th place, the Toyota Corolla is back up to #8 after two horrid months (#14 in April and #13 in May). The performer of the month is the Mazda CX-5, up a further 5 spots to reach a best-ever 13th place with 4,671 sales. It is now #29 year-to-date. Possibly helped by its hybrid version, the Toyota Estima is up 9 ranks on last month and 122% year-on-year to #17 and 4,433 units, while the Toyota 86 enjoys its third consecutive month in the Top 30 at #27 with a record 3,088 sales.

Previous month: Japan May 2012 : Toyota Aqua only 600 sales below the Prius
