Hyundai Santa Fe

Now that most June figures have been published, may I introduce you to the fourth instalment of BSCB’s monthly World Roundup. While last month we focused on General Motors and the Toyota Etios, this month the spotlight is on Ford and Hyundai. The main event worldwide in June is the pole position of the Ford Focus in China, a ranking it holds for the very first time thanks to 27,160 sales.

Ford Focus

It is the first time a Ford model manages to top the Chinese passenger car ranking and is another proof of the growing domination of US manufacturers in the biggest car market in the world, with 3 US models in the 6 months 2012 Chinese Top 4: the Buick Excelle, Chevrolet Sail and Cruze! The Ford Focus is also #1 in Ireland, Norway and Israel this month. The second worldwide June headline is the new generation Hyundai Santa Fe taking the lead in its home market in South Korea as early as for its first full month of sales with a brilliant 10,423 units sold and 8.4% market share. This augurs well for the upcoming career of the model worldwide…

Renault Duster

In third spot I have chosen the Dacia/Renault Duster. After launching the Duster in Western and Central Europe and Africa in 2010 to great success, Renault expanded the Duster’s footprint to South America and Russia and sales are literally taking off: in Brazil the Duster is up to a record 16th spot with 5,170 sales, in Russia it is up to a best-ever 14th place with 4,913 units and in Colombia it is by far the best performing newcomer over the first 6 months of 2012 at #11 with 3,376 sales. Notice also the Renault Sandero breaking the 10,000 monthly sales mark for the first time in any country in the world this month – in Brazil.

Dodge Dart

A couple of big events in the US this month: the Chevrolet Malibu delivers its strongest volume in possibly 32 years at 31,402 sales, the Ford Escape lodges its best-ever month at 28,500 units and we welcome two all-new models in the ranking: the Cadillac XTS at #186 with 753 sales and the eagerly anticipated Dodge Dart at #234 with 202 units.

In Croatia, the VW Up! grabs the pole position with an astounding 7.4% share, by far the highest market share it has reached so far anywhere in the world, but also the strongest market share for any model in Croatia since February 2011. This is partly due to a large order by rental car companies though. The Toyota Etios confirms its success in South Africa: after landing directly at a brilliant #7 in May for its first month of sales in the country, it improves further to #4 with an impressive 2,105 sales and 4.1% share, more than double the next best-selling Toyota passenger car.

Great Wall Voleex C30

While Chinese manufacturers are still struggling at home, Great Wall kicks two goals overseas this month. The Great Wall Voleex C30 starts its Iranian production by ranking #11 overall this month and Great Wall becomes one of the Top 10 best-selling brands in Bulgaria over the first 6 months of 2012, now manufacturing there as well.

Toyota Camry

* See the Top 20 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Austin *

Better late than never! Finally I can share with you the most popular models across the planet in May. The podium stays unchanged, with all 3 models lodging higher sales figures than last month: the Toyota Corolla is at a brilliant 104,031 units, followed by the Ford Focus getting stronger at 90,985 sales and the VW Jetta improving also at 85,368 units, covering a range of different generations on sale around the world, from the 6th gen on sale in Europe and the US to the 2nd gen on sale in China.

Ford F-Series

Excellent performance of the Toyota Camry, boosted by its score in the US and taking advantage of the new model now on sale pretty much everywhere around the world. It is up one spot on April to 4th place with 72,138 sales and #5 year-to-date vs. #12 in 2011. The VW Golf is up 3 ranks to #5, while the Ford F-Series delivers a very solid month, up 5 spots to #6 and 68,133 units, 54,836 of which sold in the US.

Buick Excelle XT

The Hyundai Elantra is stable at a very strong 7th position (vs. #10 year-to-date), the Toyota Prius is down 5 ranks to #9 but still #3 year-to-date with 377,521 sales (including the Prius c and v), the Honda Civic is up 5 to #15 and the Opel Astra/Buick Excelle XT/GT/Verano breaks into the Top 20 thanks to the success of the sedan version the Buick Verano in the USA and Canada.

Best Selling Cars Blog now features 103 countries with official data thanks to many of you sharing information with me. But there are still 65 unloved countries on this blog for which I haven’t managed to obtain any official car sales data. What I have done for these is watch hundreds of hours of recent YouTube videos of their streets, and based on the cars I could see I have ventured an estimation of the best-selling models. Far from perfect, which is why I need official data!

Kyrgyzstan is one country I need official data for. Pic by Eric Lafforgue. All rights reserved.

So this is where you come in! To make it easier for you I have created a new page on this site (surprisingly) called ‘I need your help’. New ‘Historical Data’ page on Best Selling Cars Blog!

July 28th, 2012 No comments

The Toyota Corona may have been the best-selling car in Japan before the arrival of the Corolla in 1966… If you know this for sure please get in touch!

* Click on the ‘Historical Data’ tab below the BSCB logo to see all countries! *

I have created a new tab on Best Selling Cars Blog to give you easier access to Historical Data. No less than 67 countries now feature Historical Data on the site, with more uploaded weekly. Highlights are Germany for each year since 1946France for each year since 1949the UK for each year since 1965Brazil since 1954 and Norway since 1956. Given all my posts are ordered chronologically, the older the data, the further down the list it appears, which is why I decided to create a dedicated Historical Data page.

By clicking on the ‘Historical Data’ tab you will have access to direct links to Historical Data for the 67 countries available. Easy!

There are still a lot of patchy Historical Data areas and this is where you come in! Have a look on the ‘Historical Data’ tab at all missing periods and see whether you can help by sharing data you have that is not yet on the site… The most blatant needs are for the USA between 1928 and 1973 and 1987-1991, France for 1950-1957 and 1971-1978, Australia before 1996, Russia+China+India before 2002 and Japan before 1996…

If you can help, just comment on here and I will contact you via email.

Colombia 6 months 2012: Hyundai City and Renault Duster shine

July 28th, 2012 No comments

Renault Duster

* See the Top 100 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Juan Felipe *

After a record year in 2011, the Colombian new car market is stable over the first 6 months of 2012 at 150,149 registrations, down 1% on 2011. But beyond this quiet outlook the evolution of the different segments is very uneven: at + 114% year-on-year, commercial vehicles are the sole reason behind the stability of the market, with passenger cars and pick-ups both down 12% and taxis down 9%.

Hyundai City Plus

The Chevrolet Aveo from two generations ago is still the favourite model in Colombia with sales up 4% year-on-year to 9,765 units for a 6.5% market share. It is followed by the Renault Sandero/Stepway at 6,852 sales and 4.6% (-26%) and the Chevrolet Spark GT at 6,420 units and 4.3% (-30%). The only model to progress in the Top 9 reflects a particularity of the Colombian car market where taxis take a significant part of overall sales. The Hyundai City, the taxi version of the Hyundai Santro/i10 is up 4 spots and 30% on last year to #4 with 5,744 sales and 3.8% share, thanks to the arrival of the City Plus aka i10.

Kia Picanto

The best-performing model in the Top 10 is the Kia Picanto, boosted by the new generation of the model, up 91% and 13 ranks to #10 with 3,412 units and 2.3%. The Renault Duster is by very far the best-selling all-new model over the period at #11 with 3,376 sales and 2.2%. A couple of Koreans also deliver brilliant results: the Kia Rio is up 9 spots and 70% to #12 and the Hyundai i25 is up 23 and 187% to #13. The other two all-new models in the Top 50 are the Nissan Versa landing directly at #22 and the Nissan March at #24.

JAC Veloce

Chinese models continue to gain higher market shares in Colombia over the period. Let’s start with the Chevrolet N300, a rebadged Wuling Rongguang, up a fantastic 4132% to land directly at #13 with 2,624 sales and 1.7%. The Chery Van is up 13 spots and 136% to #30 with 1,524 units and 1% while the JAC Veloce (aka J3 Turin in Brazil) becomes the best-selling Chinese passenger car, up 119% and 23 ranks to #48 with 619 sales. There are 8 additional Chinese models in the Top 90, including the Great Wall Wingle at #73 and the Geely CK Taxi at #85.

Iran June 2012: Great Wall Voleex C30 makes its first appearance

July 28th, 2012 1 comment

Great Wall Voleex C30

* See the Top 15 most produced models by clicking on the title! *

As always the Iranian monthly models ranking reflects production (not sales) but is a pretty accurate representation of the most popular cars in the country as high import duties limit sales of other vehicles. In the Persian calendar June 2012 corresponds roughly to the third month of the Persian year 1391, Khordad, and during that period new car production continues to fall alarmingly to just 68,510 units, down 47% on Khordad 1390. Year-to-date after 3 months in 1391 the market is down 37% to 208,781.

Iran Khodro Runna

Again the main culprit for this worrying development is very weak production figures of the Saipa Pride at only 25,440 units this month, down 57% year-on-year and bringing its year-to-date total to 83,447, down 45% on 1390. Peugeot’s stopping of part imports from France is again also having an impact, with the Peugeot Pars down 16% at #5 and the 206 down 74% at #6. Reversely the Peugeot 405 still holds well, up 9% year-on-year at #2 with 12,695 units ahead of the Iran Khodro Samand at 10,111 and the Renault Tondar 90 (aka Dacia Logan) at 6,271.

But the main event this month is the very rare arrival of a new model in the ranking: after Lifan, Great Wall is the second Chinese manufacturer to start assembling new cars in Iran: the Great Wall Voleex C30 lands directly in 11th position this month with 146 units produced. For its part the Iran Khodro Runna seems to have actually started its career in its native country no less than 3 years after its original presentation with a best-ever 57 units produced this month (#15).

Now that we have explored in detail the Top 100 best-selling models over the first half of 2012 in France, let’s go further down the ranking and see what movements animate the Top 356 All-models ranking… Among the newcomers, the Citroen C4 Aircross shines, landing directly at #116 with 1,475 sales, the Bollore Blue Car is #124 with 1,383 units, the VW New Beetle is #128, the VW CC #131 and the Hyundai i40 #138. The Peugeot 4008 is #170 with 556 sales, followed by the Hyundai Veloster (#176), Mazda CX-5 (#177) and Mini Coupe (#190).

Sales of Aston Martin Virage are up 200% in France over the period

Notice the Chevrolet Camaro up from #290 and 9 sales one year ago to #200 with 325 units sold over the period. The Toyota GT-86 brilliantly lands at #215 with 264 sales while its twin the Subaru BRZ is still only #338 with 2 units. The Opel Ampera appears at #246 with 109 sales while the Chevrolet Volt is #288 at 19 units. The Dacia Dokker is instantly #263 with 49 sales in the sole month of June.

Peugeot 301

A few luxury models make their first appearance in the ranking over the period: the Ferrari FF is #273 with 37 units, the McLaren MP4 is #290 with 18 sales, the Lamborghini Aventador is #294 with 16 units, the Fisker Karma is #302 with 11 sales while the Aston Martin Cygnet is up 300% to #293 and the Aston Martin Virage is up 200% to #299.

Citroen C-Elysee

There are also a few local models that have only just started their career in their native country: the Peugeot 301 which will only be sold in Eastern Europe and Africa appears at #308 with 9 units all sold in June, the Renault ZOE is #327 with 4 sales while the Citroen C-Elysee, potentially a demo model as this car is only on sale in China, ranks #353 with just one unit sold.
