Like we did for the US a week ago and after exploring Chinese May 2012 sales in detail, I thought we could pause on the Chinese 2012 Year-to-date models ranking to see if we can extract some longer-term trends vs. 2011. The first striking element in this ranking is the complete reshuffle of the podium. If after 5 months in 2011 the VW Lavida was leading ahead of the VW Jetta and Buick Excelle, this year it’s the latter that holds the Chinese pole position with sales up 24% to 122,642. It is followed by the Chevrolet Sail at 112,274 units, up 60% year-on-year and one of the biggest success story of this start of 2012 as it reached the #1 spot in May.

Sales of VW Passat in China are up 102% year-on-year.

The VW Passat has taken full advantage of its new generation to grow its sales by a huge 102% vs. last year to 101,810 units, enabling it to round up the podium as VW’s best-seller over the period. The Passat became the 2nd model ever to sell upwards of 30,000 units in a single month in China last January. Last year’s leaders the VW Lavida (-10%) and Jetta (-2%) follow. The other new entrant in the Top 10 is the Hyundai Verna up 15 spots and 77% to #8 and 83,382 units.

Sales of Nissan Tiida in China are up 169% year-on-year.

Further down, the VW Tiguan is up 12 ranks an 44% to #11, the Nissan Tiida up 57 and 169% to #14 thanks to the new generation (pictured above), the VW Magotan up 48 and 121% to #20 and the Audi A6L up 22 and 44% to #23. As far as Chinese models are concerned, while last year there was one in the Top 5 this time there is none in the Top 10… The FAW Xiali N3/5 still leads but is down 7 spots and 18% to #12, followed by the Great Wall Haval H3/H5 at #18 (+20%), the Great Wall Voleex C30 at #21 (-4%) and the Chery QQ at #25 (-13%).

Launched in August 2011, the Baojun 630 sold 54,920 units in its first 10 months of sales.

There are 7 all-new models in the Top 100, with the Kia K2 leading the charge at #28 with 54,375 sales, ahead of the Baojun 630 at #55 with 33,066 units, the Peugeot 308 at #67 and 27,370 units, the Chery E5 at #72 with 25,702 sales, the Mazda3 Xingcheng at #79 and 24,005 units, the Brilliance V5 at #99 with 16,675 sales and the BYD G6 at #100 and 16,590 units.
