2010 was already a record year for the new car market in Indonesia at 764,710 registrations, well 2011 smashed that record with sales up a massive 17% to 894,180 units! This makes Indonesia one of the most dynamic car markets in the world and the 16th biggest overall below Mexico (905,888 sales) and ahead of Argentina (857,983) and Spain (809,948). The million for 2012? That would be a huge milestone in South East Asia as no country has ever managed that feat in the region. Toyota holds 34.7% of the market, Daihatsu 15.6% and Mitsubishi 15%.

It turns out that Indonesian car website Detikoto has started to publish monthly rankings for Indonesia so you can see the November 2011 Top 10 and October 2011 Top 10 by clicking on it. In the Full Year, the Toyota Avanza managed to stay the favourite vehicle in the country for the 5th consecutive year with 162,367 sales and 18.2% share, up 15%. With the new generation launched late in the year, the 2012 figure should be even better.

2012 Daihatsu Xenia

Its twin the Daihatsu Xenia has fared a little less well, up just 1% to a still impressive 66,835 units but seeing its market share go from 8.6% in 2010 to 7.5% this year. Again 2012 should be better for the Xenia, facelifted as the same time as the Avanza. The Toyota Innova completes a podium unchanged on 2010 with 54,763 sales and 6.1%, up 2%.

Suzuki APV

Excellent year for the Suzuki APV, boosted by a facelift and a new Luxury version, up 3 spots to #4 and a huge 67% to 30,089 sales and 3.4%, however still far from the year-end podium. The Nissan Grand Livina has another solid year at #5, making the 2011 Top 5 100% MPVs! Small MPVs are an Indonesian specialty and over the years it has become the world hub for this type of vehicles. All Top 5 models are actually assembled in Indonesia and exported all around the world.

Toyota Rush

Another Indonesian specialty is small 4WDs: both the Toyota Rush, #6 with 25,012 sales, and its twin the Daihatsu Terios, #7 at 22,416 units, are up a huge 36% on 2010! We may also see the Nissan Juke, #8 in November with a strong 2.5% share, appear in the year-end Top 10 in 2012…

As a result, the first Passenger Car in the true sense of the term (not an MPV, not a 4WD) is #8: the Honda Jazz is down 4 spots and 15% and is followed by the Toyota Yaris (-3%) and Nissan March imported from neighbouring Thailand and the only newcomer in the Top 10.
