Canada 2009: Ford F-Series reclaims top spot in devastated market (-10.8%)

The Ford F-Series is back to #1 in Canada, breaking its volume record in 2009.

New light vehicle sales in Canada are hit full frontal by the financial crisis at -10.8% to 1.461.675 units, the lowest annual volume since 1998. Ford (+6.8%) swims upstream, posting the only year-on-year gain among the Top 5 carmakers to reclaim the brands pole position off Toyota (-9.5%). Chevrolet (-22.4%), Dodge (-19.6%) and Honda (-19.1%) all fall twice as fast as the market just below, while Hyundai (+28%) posts insolent growth to advance two spots to #6 overall. Pontiac (-46.8%) is the hardest hit in the Top 10, down four ranks to #10. Kia (+22.9%) is up two spots to #11.

Model-wise, after an interruption by the Honda Civic last year the Ford F-Series (+20.1%) reclaims the pole position for the 6th time in the past 7 years, breaking its volume record at over 81.000 units. The Honda Civic (-13.5%) is relegated to #2 but holds onto the #1 passenger car title for the 12th straight year, distancing the Toyota Corolla (-6.6%) and Mazda3 (-6.7%). The Dodge Caravan (+1.3%) is up two spots to #5, the GMC Sierra (+8%) up three to #6 and the Ford Escape (+12.4%) breaks into the annual Top 10 for the first time at #7. The Hyundai Elantra (+159.6%) does the same, up 32 ranks to #10 while the Toyota RAV4 (+25.6%) is up 9 to #11.
