Australia 2002: Commodore in command, breaks monthly record

Record car market in Australia this year with 824,309 units sold, up 7% year-on-year and beating the previous record of 807,649 in 1998. The Holden Commodore sees its sales boosted by the arrival of the new VY generation in September and manages to maintain itself an a massive 11% market share with 88,478 sales, up 4% on 2001 and its second best ever volume behind the 94,642 units it delivered in 1996. Coinciding with the arrival of the new generation, the Commodore reaches what would remain its strongest ever monthly sales figure at 9,667 units in October!

2002 Ford Falcon

The Ford Falcon, also renewed this year with the BA generation, is a distant 2nd at 54,629 sales and 6.8%, followed by the Toyota Corolla up 13% to 34,948 sales and 4.3%, the Toyota Camry up 16% to 30,952, the Holden Astra up 5% to 29,536 and Mitsubishi Magna/Verada down 4% to 23,405. The most popular commercial vehicle is still the Toyota Hilux at #7 with 22,515 units.

Further down, notice the Ford Falcon Ute breaking into the year-end Top 10 for the first time in at least 15 years, the Mazda 323 up 47% to #11, the Holden Commodore Ute up 23% to #15, , the Honda CR-V leading the SUV ranking for the first time at #16, the Nissan X-Trail landing directly at #19 with 9,886 sales for its first full year, and the Peugeot 307 breaking into the Australian Top 50 for the first time at #50, the first French car at that level in at least a decade.
