Spain 1991: Renault Clio topples Renault 19 to #1 in market down -9.8%

The Renault Clio is the #1 vehicle in Spain for its first full year in market.

New car sales in Spain endure a second consecutive year of steep decline in 1991 at -9.8% to 885.594 units. After seeing its market share fall for at least 5 straight years and slice in half from 30.5% in 1985 to 14.7% in 1990, Renault (-1.6%) finally bounces back up to 18.3%, distancing Ford (-14%) and Opel (-20.7%) in an unchanged podium. Seat (-8%) overtakes Peugeot (-17.5%) for 4th place while Rover (+43.4%) and BMW (+17.9%) post the largest gains in the Top 10. Lightning strike in the LCV brands ranking: Nissan (-15.2%) overtakes Renault (-22.5%) for #1 for the first time since BSCB started following Spain annually in 1985.

Launched last year, the Renault Clio (+314.7%) is an instant blockbuster in Spain, even snapping the annual pole position off the Renault 19 (-14.5%) for its first full year in market, with the Ford Fiesta (-26.8%) rounding up the podium. The Seat Ibiza (-27%) and Citroen AX (-19.6%) close the Top 5 like in 1990, the Peugeot 205 (-10.9%) overtakes the Opel Corsa for #6 and the Opel Kadett (-43.5%) dives down 5 spots to #8, Notice also the Ford Escort (+5.1%) and Orion (-8.2%) at #10 and #11 adding up to 6.7% share which would place the combo in 3rd position overall. The Seat Toledo lands at #13 and the Citroen ZX at #15.
