Australia 1984: Ford Falcon holds onto pole position

The Holden Commodore is 12.000 sales off the #1 spot in 1984.

In 1984 the Australian new car market is up a splendid 12% year-on-year to 638.745 registrations, a new all-time record. Ford tops the brands ranking with just under 24% share above Toyota at 19.7% and Holden at 18.1%, with Nissan (10.9%), Mitsubishi (9.8%) and Mazda (6.1%) the only other manufacturers holding over 2% of the market. A very concentrated market indeed with the Top 6 brands holding a 88.5% share of overall annual Australian sales.

The Ford Falcon (+11%) retains the title of best-selling nameplate in the country for the third year running thanks to 68.313 units, a good 12.000 sales above the Holden Commodore (+58%) with the Ford Laser (+27%) rounding up the podium ahead of the Toyota Corona (+43%). Notice the Ford Telstar at #5, Holden Camira at #7 and Subaru Leone at #14.
